About Magento

The first version of Magento was released in 2008 as an open source e-commerce platform. Since then, it has become the world’s most popular dedicated shop software. Magento is based on the Zend Framework and is developed by the company of the same name, Magento, which was purchased by Adobe Inc. in June 2018.

Magento (1) shop software was available in two versions. The free Magento Community Edition for tech-savvy retailers, and the paid Magento Enterprise Edition. Magento Community featured only the core features with no warranty or guarantee. The support of the community was, however, available to shop operators. Magento Enterprise, on the other hand, provided an all-in-one solution including expansion options and support. Since the introduction of Magento 2, Magento (1) is no longer officially available and licensing of the Enterprise version is no longer possible.

Magento 2, which is based on a new software architecture, was released at the end of 2017, and with it came a revised model of the various versions: Enterprise and Enterprise Cloud are now available under the name Magento Commerce, but retailers can still choose between a self-hosted “on-premise” version or a rented “SaaS” version. The scope of services remains the same. The same goes for Magento Community Edition, which is now available as Magento Open Source.

The special versions Market Ready Germany and Magento DE have been developed for Germany, since the original versions did not meet the legal requirements of the German market. Market Ready Germany is comparable with Magento Community/Open Source, and Magento DE with the Enterprise/Commerce Version.
